Seoul has a hundred clinics. We visited thirty-seven of them over a year. We watched how they answered the phone at 4:40 p.m. on a Friday. We watched how they treated the woman in row three. We watched how the lobby smelled when the last patient of the day walked out.

We did not choose the biggest. We chose the one where our own mother could walk in, alone, and not feel briefly invisible. That clinic is Seramic, in Gangnam. A single partner. Not a list.

The doctor who runs it does not advertise. Her name is in our message — ask when you write. The waiting room has five chairs, never more. A consultation is long, and there is never a second patient sharing the room with you.

What you are paying for is not the equipment, which is the same equipment as everyone else's. What you are paying for is the fact that, on the day we send you, that room belongs to you alone.
